About These Teachers

Welcome everyone!

My name is Karley and I am a teacher in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. I graduated from the University of Victoria with my Bachelor of Education in June 2012 and got on the TOC (teacher on call) list right away.  My first year of teaching was tremendous in various ways, but the most exciting part for me was landing two contracts in January 2013.  I taught music/dance/drama at an elementary school and a middle school; therefore, I taught about 180 students from K-grade 8 every single week.  During the 2013/2014 school year I taught grade 8 (middle school) science, French, CAPP and PE.  During the 2014/2015 year l was maternity leave; I loved every single second of my home time with my baby girl, Charlee Rae. Currently I am teaching .6 between two schools and two grades (7 and 8) and I work with two amazingly talented teaching partners.  This job continues to be a wild ride and I love it!

I met Meaghan through our education degree at UVic; however, we became closer friends once we graduated.  We quickly discovered, via many lengthy text message discussions, that we had many things in common, including: our love for country music, our passion for fitness and healthy living, the first initial of our last names (thanks to my husband for that awesome upgrade!) and our philosophy of education.  Since these discoveries we’ve become fast friends and began dreaming up this blog.  We are so excited to share with you all what we know, think, experience and feel about our developing teaching careers. 

When I am not teaching you can find me: running around with my sweet girl, practicing/teaching yoga, playing with my kitties, drinking lots of coffee, digging in my yard, running and throwing tires at my gym and singing loudly in my car…with Beyonce.

And now for me… Hi! I’m Meaghan and, like Karley, I am also a new teacher here in Victoria, BC. I have been a teacher in the Victoria district since September 2012 after graduating in April. Early in 2012, I started my first temporary contract teaching English and French to a lively group of grade eight students. For the 2013-2014 school year, I had had a two full time contracts for 9 and 10 weeks each with some TOC work in between. Last year I had my first class all year – 3 days a week until Christmas and then full time until June. There have definitely been ups and downs  but I can honestly say I have loved every minute of my job (even the ones that caused some sleepless nights…) because I have learned so much about myself as both a teacher and a person. Writing this blog has also helped be to become much more reflective about my practice.

Besides teaching, I have worked as a Research Assistant on an education project at the university. It has been an incredible opportunity to balance my practice with the theory in our research. You can read more about the research project here:

One of my main hobbies is traveling – I spend much of my free time planning and dreaming about where I want to go. I recently returned from a trip to Indonesia. When I’m here in Victoria I love running, playing sports, listening to music, spending time with friends and family, and wandering around this beautiful city.
